Visual science, work (11/40) The mechanical energy of a bowling ball gives the ball the capability to apply a force to a bowling pin in order to displace it. Since the massive ball has mechanical energy (in the form of kinetic energy), it is able to do work on the pin. Mechanical energy can be considered the ability to do work. Work is done when a force applied to an object moves that object. Work calculated by multiplying the force by the amount of movement of an object. Interesting to note that the force carrier for the electromagnetic force is the photon.

Visual science, times (13/40) The number nine is considered to be in some sense a "magic" number because if you multiply a number by nine and add all the digits of the new number together, the sum will always add up to nine which is neat. Nine is also the highest single digit Arabic numeral. You can’t get any higher without taking on an extra digit. Nine runs rings around the other numerals.

Visual science, lambda (14/40) Wavelength lambda measures the distance between the crests of a wave, many different things can move like waves like water, strings, air(sound) the floor, and light can be treated as a wave. With regard to sound waves, to play most musical instruments you create standing waves on a string or in a pipe or tube. The perceived pitch of the sound is related to the frequency of the wave. The higher the frequency the higher is the pitch which will equate to a shorter wavelength, lambda.

Visual science, energy total (15/40) As you climb, chemical energy is converted to mechanical work to overcome the force of gravity, when climbing a straighter path the distance is shorter and the gravitational pull is therefore greater! The energy total an object has due to either its motion or its stored energy of position is the sum of the two.

Visual science, temperature (16/40) Temperature is a measure of hotness, average kinetic energy per molecule in a substance, those atoms and molecules inside things don't stay still, even in a solid, they're constantly moving and jiggling, regions in thermal contact will have the same temperature when there is no net exchange of internal energy between them. Temperature then is what determines the direction of heat flow, out of the higher temperature region and into the lower temperature region, flowing from hot to cold based on any deficits. Kelvin is the SI unit of temperature!

Visual science, add (17/40) The earliest conclusive evidence of addition is that Egyptians and Babylonians employed it in 2000 B.C. The symbols of addition and subtraction were conceived around the 16th century, although prior to this, equations had been written in the form of words.

Visual science, heat transferred (18/40) Essentially, ice cream melts away because it is absorbing energy around it in the form of heat. This extra energy causes the atoms to vibrate faster, changing from a solid into a liquid. When the suns energy warms the side walk, the temperature of the ground is increased to above freezing. Once dropped this will then warm the ice cream via conduction and lead to its melting.

Visual science, energy kinetic (19/40) A moving object or particle posses kinetic energy this energy depends not solely on its motion but also on its mass. The kind of motion could be translation that is motion along a path from one place to another, the energy could be vibrational or rotation about an axis, the energy is often made up of a combination of these. In this case where the object is rolling without slipping, then its kinetic energy is expressed as the sum of the translational kinetic energy of its center of mass plus the rotational kinetic energy around the center of mass.

Visual science, voltage (20/40) Voltage is the unit of current in your battery or circuit and is measured in volts. If you envisage your battery as a water pipe, the voltage would be the water pressure in the pipe that keeps the electrons swimming along, it makes the current flow through, delivering power to your devices.

Visual science, energy (21/40) Many substances contain two kinds of energy water is no different. The first kind is kinetic energy, this is energy that is utilized during the execution of processes like movement. Kinetic energy allows for waves to exist and permits the flow of water, but water can also harbor a second type of energy potential energy, this is energy stored in the water, contained, this pool of energy is accessed when water starts to flow, it's transferred to kinetic energy and causes the movement.

Visual science, specific heat (22/40) In order to maintain body temperature and stay warm the human body gets some assistance due to the fact that the body is primarily made of water which cools slowly. The quantity of thermal energy required to alter the temperature is relatively high compared to other objects with a similar mass because water has a very high specific heat (c). The specific heat of human skin is just a little lower but there's far less mass so suntans can happen rapidly.

Visual science, speed of light (23/40) The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, caused when eruptions from the Sun stream into the Earth’s magnetic field, charged particles set out from the Sun at between 300,000 and 500,000 meters per second in all directions, but don't confuse that with the speed of light which is a lot quicker, around one thousand times faster, photons of light can only ever travel at the speed of light 300,000,000 meters per second in the vacuum of empty space, and a bit slower in our homes because they bump into molecules in the air!
